Getting Married in Scotland

The Church of Scotland has a more relaxed set of regulations concerning marriage.

It is not only Scottish residents that can have a Church of Scotland wedding ceremony.

For the past 30 years or so believers of any faith can have the same.

As long as they believe in monogamy and also that they believe the vows they will undertake.

In Scotland religious ceremonies can take place in any place in Scotland including churches.

No banns are published in Scotland and there are no residency requirements.

Notice has to be given to the registrar at least 15 days before the wedding date.

If everything is in order the District Registrar will issue a marriage schedule no more than 7 days before the wedding date and this has to be given to the minister presiding before the ceremony begins.

The Church of Scotland will marry divorced couples although you will be asked to clarify the reasons behind the divorce and they will want to be certain that any new marriage will not be against you or any child’s interest.

The minister has the right to refuse to marry a couple.

The Church believes that marriage is a lifelong commitment so the minister may well want to meet you beforehand to be sure that you understand the decision that you are to be taking and he will want to discuss the order of service.
